ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with Dr. Mohamed Al Hassan, the UN Special Representative to the Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in Erbil on Tuesday to discuss political developments in Iraq and the region.
The two officials emphasized the importance of resolving outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government, agreeing on the need to safeguard the constitutional rights of the Kurdish people and the Kurdistan Region’s federal status.
They highlighted the recent passage of Iraq’s federal budget law by the Council of Representatives as a positive step toward addressing disputes between Erbil and Baghdad, PM Barzani’s office said in a statement.
Al Hassan acknowledged Prime Minister Barzani’s role in maintaining security and stability in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region. In response, the prime minister praised UNAMI’s constructive and balanced efforts, particularly its role in fostering dialogue among Iraq’s political actors and contributing to long-term stability.
