KRG Minister Urges International Support to Protect Christians in Iraq

ERBIL – Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Transportation Minister Ano Jawhar and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Political Bureau Member Hemn Hawrami attended a special session at the International Religious Freedom Summit, where ministers and global leaders discussed the challenges facing religious minorities.

Representing Christians, Jawhar highlighted the deteriorating situation of Christians, Yezidis, and other communities in Iraq, particularly in the Nineveh Plain. He accused militias of depriving Christians of political representation in the region.

“The Kurdistan Region remains a safe haven for Christians and all communities in Iraq,” Jawhar stated, emphasizing that the KRG upholds a policy of peaceful coexistence. “Before 2003, there were only two churches in the Kurdistan Region, but today, there are 17, which is undeniable proof of coexistence.”

Jawhar urged the US and other countries at the summit to support Christian demands, including the removal of militias from the Nineveh Plain and preventing demographic changes in the area. He also called for reforms in Iraq’s electoral system to ensure fair representation.

Additionally, the minister stressed the need to implement Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution, arguing that doing so would extend the Kurdistan Region’s model of democracy and coexistence to the Nineveh Plain and other parts of Iraq.

Jawhar also recounted historical atrocities against Christians in the region, citing the 1915 Saifo genocide, the 1933 Simel massacre, and persecution under al-Qaeda and IS in recent decades.

His remarks underscored the ongoing struggle for religious freedom and minority rights in Iraq, as well as the KRG’s role in providing sanctuary and advocating for these communities on the international stage.
