KRG Expands Green Spaces to Over 18% with Environmental Efforts

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ninth Cabinet has implemented significant environmental initiatives over the past five years, increasing the green space ratio in the Kurdistan Region from 15% to over 18%.

According to a KRG statement, 14,390 environmental permits have been issued for projects, while over 25,000 projects have undergone environmental compliance monitoring.

Authorities have taken legal action against projects that failed to meet environmental guidelines.

Under the directive of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the government is cracking down on illegal industrial facilities that do not comply with environmental standards.

In a parallel effort, the KRG has prioritized water security by constructing dams and reservoirs to protect groundwater and support agriculture.

The Ninth Cabinet has completed eight dams, with several more under construction.

Additionally, environmental regulations now require all new projects to allocate at least 25% of their land to green spaces and integrate wastewater treatment units if they consume large amounts of water.

To combat air pollution, authorities are enforcing penalties on vehicles emitting toxic gases and other entities harming the environment until they comply with regulations.

These efforts have contributed to a greener Kurdistan, with the green space ratio now exceeding 18%.
