Iraqis Spend 3 Billion Dinars Daily on Tobacco Products

ERBIL — The Iraqi Ministry of Health has launched a comprehensive anti-smoking campaign, revealing that Iraqis spend nearly 3 billion dinars daily on tobacco products.

The announcement coincides with the National Day for Smoking Cessation in Iraq, observed annually on February 2. This date also marks the implementation of Anti-Smoking Law No. 19 of 2012.

Dr. Wathiq Kailan, the director of the program in the health ministry, released a statement outlining the campaign's goals.

This year’s activities focus on raising awareness about the health, economic, and environmental damages caused by tobacco and its byproducts, encouraging individuals to quit smoking and using other tobacco products.

The campaign, under the slogan "Smoking Harms the Beauty and Femininity of Women," highlights the health risks faced by women who smoke.

Globally, 8 million smokers die annually due to tobacco-related illnesses, including 1.5 million women.

Out of the 200 million female smokers worldwide, the majority live in low- and middle-income countries.

The statement emphasized the need to address the growing number of women smokers in Iraq and worldwide, urging collective efforts to combat the tobacco epidemic and its devastating effects on public health and society.
