PM Barzani Congratulates Trump, Pledges Continued Partnership

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration as president of the United States, reaffirming the commitment to strengthening the partnership between Erbil and Washington.

“I congratulate @realDonaldTrump and the American people on his inauguration as president of the United States. The Kurdistan-US strategic partnership and the bond among our people and armed forces remains strong,” Barzani wrote on X.

Trump took the presidential oath of office for the second time on Monday in a ceremony inside the US Capitol rotunda, marking the beginning of his second term. The event saw his running mate, J.D. Vance, sworn in as vice president.

Despite political challenges following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, Trump secured re-election by defeating Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, winning 312 Electoral College votes to her 226. He also won the popular vote with 77.3 million votes (49.9%) to Harris’ 75 million (48.4%).

The inauguration, originally set to take place outside on the Capitol terrace, was moved indoors due to extreme weather conditions. It was the first indoor ceremony of its kind since Ronald Reagan’s 1985 inauguration.

The Kurdistan Region has maintained a strategic partnership with the US for over three decades, with cooperation spanning counterterrorism, economic development, and human rights initiatives. The establishment of the US Consulate General in Erbil in 2011 further strengthened diplomatic and economic ties.

The US continues to support the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in addressing regional security challenges, including efforts to combat the Islamic State (IS) and implement reforms within the Peshmerga forces.
