US Official Tells PM Barzani: Kurdistan is a Vital Partner

ERBIL – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani held talks with Victoria Taylor, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, on Wednesday to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and key regional issues.

The meeting, held in Erbil, also covered efforts to form the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet, developments in Iraq, and the situation in Syria.

According to an official statement from the Prime Minister's office, Deputy Assistant Secretary Taylor underscored the vital role of the Kurdistan Region as an important partner of the United States.

Both sides agreed on the urgency of resuming oil exports from the Kurdistan Region, emphasizing its significance for both local and federal financial stability. The suspension of exports has notably impacted Iraq's federal budget, and both leaders stressed the need for swift action to address this issue.

Prime Minister Barzani also reiterated the Kurdistan Region's commitment to fulfilling its obligations under Iraq's budget law, urging the federal government in Baghdad to meet its financial commitments to the region, including securing constitutional rights and entitlements.

The discussions also touched on the situation in Syria, with both parties emphasizing the importance of maintaining security and stability, as well as ensuring the protection of the Kurdish people and other minority groups in the country.

The talks highlighted the ongoing need for international cooperation to support the Kurdish community’s rights in Syria.

The meeting marks a continued effort to enhance cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the United States on a range of political, economic, and security issues in the Middle East.
