ERBIL — A US military and diplomatic delegation met with senior officials and military leaders of the Kurdistan Region on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing process of reforming and restructuring the Peshmerga forces, an official statement announced.
The meeting, held at the Kurdistan Region Presidency, included representatives from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Peshmerga forces, and officials from the Presidency. The US delegation was led by General Kevin Leahy, commander of coalition forces in Iraq and Syria.
Discussions centered on the latest progress in the reform and reorganization of the Peshmerga forces, as well as the challenges and obstacles facing the process. Both sides emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to ensure the success of the reform initiative.
According to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the meeting also addressed mechanisms for implementing the next phases of the reform process and underscored the critical role of cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and its international partners.
In addition to the Peshmerga reform agenda, the meeting covered broader regional developments and security issues, reflecting the shared commitment to maintaining stability and advancing strategic goals in the region.
The Peshmerga reform project, supported by the United States and the Global Coalition, aims to unify and modernize the Kurdish military forces to enhance their effectiveness and ensure sustainable security in the Kurdistan Region.
