Pentagon Denies Reports of New Bases or Joint Patrols in Syria

ERBIL — The US has dismissed reports of joint patrols with French forces along the border with Turkey aimed at maintaining security between the Turkish army and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh addressed recent claims regarding the US military’s activities in Syria during a press briefing. Singh firmly denied reports suggesting the establishment of new bases or permanent structures in the Kobani region.

“The US is not setting up any type of basing or permanent structures in the Kobani region, which I think is what you’re referencing,” Singh clarified, emphasizing, “In terms of US presence and force posture, no changes.”

She further stated that there are no adjustments to the US mission in Syria or Iraq, which remains focused on ensuring the enduring defeat of ISIS.

“Our presence in Syria remains in that eastern part of the country. We partner with the SDF. Obviously, you know our long-standing mission to defeat ISIS in Syria remains,” she added.

Singh also dismissed reports about joint patrols involving US, French, and SDF forces, saying, “I’m not aware of any joint patrols, if that’s what you’re alluding to… I don’t think there’s any truth to those reports.”

The US has maintained a consistent military presence in eastern Syria to combat IS militants alongside its local partners, including the SDF, and it has 2000 troops in in Syria
