SDF Commander Warns Against US Troop Withdrawal in Syria

ERBIL — Mazloum Abdi, Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), cautioned that a US troop withdrawal from Syria could empower Islamic State (IS) resurgence and destabilize the region, further risking a renewed civil war.

In an interview with The Guardian on Thursday, Abdi urged the US administration to reconsider any plans for troop reductions in northeastern Syria, highlighting the critical role of US forces in maintaining regional stability. “The main reason for this region’s stability is the presence of US forces,” Abdi said, warning that their withdrawal would strengthen extremist groups and escalate conflicts.

Abdi stated that IS fighters are regrouping and could exploit any security vacuum created by the withdrawal of US forces. He also noted that the jihadist group is targeting detention facilities housing former fighters, emphasizing the potential for widespread unrest if these detainees escape.

“We see IS aiming to exploit this situation to attack detention centers and unleash chaos,” Abdi said, referring to continued SDF efforts to secure their areas against attacks by Turkish-backed factions and other hostile groups.

Clashes between the SDF and Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) forces near the Euphrates River, particularly around Tishreen Dam, remain a major concern. Despite adhering to a declared truce, Abdi highlighted persistent violations by Turkish-backed militias.

He called for international mediation to enforce a lasting ceasefire and reiterated his proposal to establish Kobani as a demilitarized zone to address Turkey’s security concerns. “We remain committed to de-escalation and urge dialogue, but Turkey must stop using its allied factions to attack our forces,” Abdi said.

Abdi underscored the importance of continued cooperation with the United States in combating IS and maintaining security. He also appealed to European nations for support, emphasizing that the SDF’s fight against IS was also in defense of global security.

“SDF forces fought against IS not just on behalf of our people but for Europe as well,” he noted, urging European powers to remain engaged in ensuring the region’s stability.

Abdi reiterated the SDF’s commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity and inclusivity in future governance. “No Syrian patriot desires division,” he affirmed, adding that inclusive political participation and consensus are essential for achieving lasting unity.

The SDF commander also expressed concerns over potential US policy shifts under Donald Trump’s presidency, fearing that troop reductions could lead to regional instability. However, Abdi expressed hope that international allies would recognize the importance of the SDF in countering threats and fostering long-term peace in Syria.
