PUK Shuts Down PKK-Affiliated Organization in Sulaymaniyah

ERBIL — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) security forces have shut down the Nugar Organization in Sulaymaniyah, a group reportedly affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The organization, which claimed to focus on cultural activities, was known for its connections to the PKK, including hosting an art exhibition for PKK leaders in 2020 and collaborating with PKK-affiliated media outlet Zhn TV.

In a statement, the organization accused PUK security forces of acting without judicial authorization. “An armed group under the name of Sulaymaniyah Asayish [security] came to our headquarters, closed it down, and tore down our sign without any legal basis,” the statement read. They described the action as “illegal and immoral,” claiming it was based on unfounded suspicions.

The PUK security forces have yet to respond to the accusations, and no official explanation has been given for the closure.

The shutdown is part of a broader crackdown by the PUK on entities allegedly linked to the PKK. On December 31, 2024, multiple PKK-affiliated companies and organizations, including Newgar, Marziya, RJAK, and Gizngi Barbayan, were closed in simultaneous raids across Sulaymaniyah. While these groups claim to engage in activities like women’s empowerment and media production, reports suggest they have ties to the PKK and its operations in the region.

The actions come weeks after PUK senior leader and KRG Deputy PM Qubad Talabani met with the Turkish ambassador to Iraq on December 5, prompting speculation of a covert agreement between the PUK and Turkey. Analysts believe the closures could signify a shift in the PUK’s stance toward the PKK, despite its past portrayal as a supporter of the group.

The affected organizations and companies, including Gizngi Barbayan, have criticized the PUK’s actions, accusing the party of yielding to Turkish pressure. “This is subordination to the decision of the Kurdistan invaders,” Gizngi Barbayan stated, vowing to reopen its offices.
