Turkey Vows to Eliminate Syrian Kurdish Fighters

ERBIL – Turkey declared on Monday that it is “only a matter of time” before Syrian Kurdish fighters are eliminated, emphasising its stance against the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which it considers a terror group linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

“Conditions in Syria have changed. We believe it’s only a matter of time before PKK/YPG is eliminated,” Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said during a press conference in Ankara.

The YPG, a key component of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), has been instrumental in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria.

However, Turkey views the group as a security threat due to its ties to the PKK, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU.

Fidan warned Western nations against supporting Kurdish fighters, stating, “If you have different aims in the region, if you want to serve another policy by using IS as an excuse to embolden the PKK, then there is no way for that either.”

The comments followed a meeting between Fidan and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, during which they discussed the threat posed by IS in Syria and the region after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime to Islamist-led rebels.

“We discussed what we can do together against the threat of IS in Syria and the region,” Fidan said, highlighting the importance of preventing the resurgence of the Islamic State.

“IS is a poison for Muslim societies. Using our religion to brutally kill people and create chaos is not something we will remain silent about.”

Turkey has reiterated its commitment to combating both IS and groups it deems terrorist threats, maintaining its stance as a key regional player in shaping Syria’s future.
