ERBIL — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), under the leadership of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, announced the completion of 10 major strategic projects and several additional initiatives in 2024, reflecting significant progress in infrastructure, economic development, and public services.
In infrastructure, the KRG completed several key road and bridge projects. The Spilik-Khalifan-Soran road and the 120-meter road connecting Erbil to Duhok were significant milestones. Additionally, bridges in Derbandikhan and Awakhair were opened, facilitating smoother travel for commuters. New projects, such as the Erbil-Koya road and the Bardarash-Khabat link, were also initiated, further strengthening connectivity across the Kurdistan Region.
Food security remained a priority, with major investments in agricultural infrastructure. The Qushtapa grain silo, with a capacity of 40,000 tons and a budget of 21.2 billion IQD, began operations to serve local farmers. Similarly, the Halabja silo, designed to store 40,000 tons of grains at a cost of 27.2 billion IQD, is nearing completion. In addition, the Akray Green Market project, costing 28.6 billion IQD, will become Iraq’s second-largest hub for fruits and vegetables, supporting local produce and markets.
Water resource management saw significant advancements. The rehabilitation of dams in Chamrga, Bastora, and Gomaspan added 120 million cubic meters of water storage capacity, addressing vital water needs. Projects such as the Erbil Water Fast-Track Program and the Qushtapa Water Project aim to resolve water shortages for over 2 million residents, ensuring sustainable access to clean water.
The energy sector also experienced a transformative year with the launch of the “Rwnaki Project," a cornerstone initiative targeting 24-hour electricity coverage across the Kurdistan Region by 2026. To date, over 100,000 homes in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok have benefited from improved electricity access, marking a significant step toward energy security.
In healthcare and education, the KRG made substantial investments to improve public services. The largest oncology hospital in Kurdistan and Iraq was inaugurated, providing advanced treatment options for cancer patients. A new rehabilitation center for individuals affected by substance abuse was also established. Furthermore, the opening of 42 new schools across the Region improved access to education, addressing longstanding gaps in the sector.
The government also emphasized economic diversification and tourism. The second phase of the Zakho Corniche Project was launched, enhancing tourism infrastructure in the area. A five-star hotel near Korek Mountain and new industrial facilities in Erbil demonstrated the Region's commitment to fostering growth in these sectors.
Environmental sustainability remained a critical focus. Expanded dam infrastructure and renewable resource initiatives were implemented to combat water scarcity and protect Kurdistan’s natural environment. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure the Region’s resilience to climate change and its impacts.
PM Barzani highlighted the strategic importance of these projects, underscoring their role in improving living standards and securing a prosperous future for the Kurdistan Region. These developments reflect the Ninth Cabinet’s dedication to sustainable development and its ongoing efforts to address the needs of its citizens across all sectors.
