Erbil Hosts Event to Launch ‘Erbil Documents in the Ottoman Era’ Book 

ERBIL — In a prestigious ceremony on Saturday, the documentary book “Erbil Documents in the Ottoman Era” was unveiled and distributed to its contributors. 

The Governorate of Erbil announced that the book sheds light on historical truths and rejects distorted narratives about Erbil’s heritage of coexistence and unity among different religions and ethnicities.  

The event was attended by prominent figures, including Dr. Peshtewan Saed, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) political bureau; Umid Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil; Ari Nanakali, head of KDP’s 16th branch; Dr. Ali Rashid, Chairman of Erbil’s Provincial Council; and Dr. Abdulhakim Khasro, head of the KRG Coordination Office. Academics, writers, and intellectuals were also present.  

Governor Umid Khoshnaw praised the efforts behind the book’s creation, stating that it has been presented to Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, who highly appreciated its historical significance. “This work highlights Erbil’s historical role as a center of coexistence and cultural unity,” Khoshnaw said.  

The book, which showcases authentic historical records from the Ottoman archives, is described as a vital resource for combating narratives that aim to distort Erbil’s identity. It reaffirms the city’s legacy as a symbol of harmony and cultural inclusivity in the Kurdistan Region and beyond.  

During the event, Khoshnaw expressed gratitude to the contributors, including researchers Ahmed Maaz Yaqoub, Mustafa Kara Kobani, Dr. Hirsh Omar Abdullah, Botan Tahsin, Dr. Hossamuddin Ali, and the editorial team from Kurdistan Chronicle magazine. Special recognition was given to sociologist and friend of the Kurds, Professor Ismail Beşikçi.  

In a subsequent discussion, academics and sociologists underscored the importance of documenting history to preserve Erbil’s status as a historical, peaceful, and culturally rich city. The event concluded with the distribution of copies of the book to contributors and participants.  

The Erbil Documents in the Ottoman Era was produced under the direct supervision of the Governor of Erbil and a distinguished panel of academics and researchers, showcasing Erbil’s unique historical and cultural legacy.
