Sistani Urges Sovereignty, Anti-Corruption Amid Regional Tensions

ERBIL — Iraq’s leading Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, called on November 4 for strengthening Iraq’s sovereignty by limiting foreign interference, enforcing the rule of law, centralizing weapons under state control, and combating widespread corruption, according to Al-Arabiya.

A source close to the Najaf-based Supreme Shia Marja’i told Al-Arabiya that Sistani’s statement reflects his “legal and national responsibility” to prevent Iraq from becoming entangled in regional conflicts. Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, Sistani’s directive aims to shield Iraq from becoming a battleground for external wars involving regional militias and foreign powers.

As an influential figure in Iraq and among Shia communities globally, Sistani advocates for national sovereignty, emphasizing that decisions on war and peace should remain within Iraq’s control. The cleric’s stance underscores his concern over Iraq’s security and stability, which he believes is jeopardized by sectarianism, foreign influence, and domestic corruption.

Sistani is widely respected for maintaining an independent political stance, distinct from Iran’s approach, and is known for his commitment to protecting the lives and rights of Iraqis. He refrains from daily political involvement, believing that religious figures should not engage directly in party politics. His views diverge from the principle of “wilayah al-faqih” endorsed by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The ongoing violence in Gaza and Lebanon has also deeply troubled Sistani. His office recently released a statement condemning the prolonged conflict, civilian suffering, and the international community’s perceived inaction. The statement was issued after Sistani met with UNAMI’s Head of Mission in Iraq, Mohammed al-Hassan, urging the UN to take effective measures to protect civilians and pursue peace.
