ERBIL — The Duhok Directorate of Archeology and Culture, in partnership with the Italian University of Udine, has embarked on several important archaeological projects in the Sheikhan region, a site rich with historical and cultural heritage.
Dr. Bekas Brifkani, Director General of Archeology and Culture for Duhok province, told Kurdistan 24 that ongoing excavations are being conducted at the archaeological site of Gre Guml in the Kalakchi district. This site holds immense historical value as the location of the famous Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BC, where Alexander the Great defeated Darius III of Persia.
Brifkani also highlighted another collaborative effort with the University of Udine, focusing on excavations in Khanasa. The project aims to uncover the origins of an ancient irrigation canal built approximately 2,700 years ago to supply water to the Assyrian capital of that era.
Plans are underway to design an archaeological park centered around Khanasa, which will play a crucial role in preserving the region's historical sites. This park will include the restoration of significant carvings, such as those depicting horses, winged bulls, and the renowned carvings of King Sennacherib, along with lion carvings and several ancient water wells along the Guml River.
In addition, an archaeological survey of Atrush is being conducted to document and preserve historical sites, providing valuable insights into the way of life in ancient times. "Such projects are essential to preserving and revitalizing the history of the region," Brifkani stated, emphasizing the importance of these endeavors in safeguarding the area's rich cultural heritage for future generations.
