Kurdistan Aims to Boost Foreign Tourism

ERBIL — The spokesperson of the Kurdistan Region’s General Board of Tourism stated that 25% of the tourists coming to the Region are foreigners, and there are plans to increase this number.

Ibrahim Abdulmajid, spokesperson of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) General Board of Tourism, told BasNews on Saturday, July 13th, “There is a possibility that this figure could be increased.”

“The first thing that we have achieved is the attention of the Kurdistan Regional Government to the sector. In the past four years, the tourism sector has been ahead of other sectors in the investment sector,” he said.

“There are four seasons of tourism, with 12 types of activities, cultural festivals, agricultural events, and many other attractions, which have consistently drawn tourists to different parts of the Kurdistan Region,” he added.

Sirwan Tofiq, head of marketing at the KRG Board of Tourism, recently highlighted the Region’s appeal, attributing the influx to its moderate summer climate and scenic beauty. He expressed optimism that tourist numbers could reach 10 million by the end of the year, underscoring ongoing efforts to boost the region’s tourism sector.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has formulated an ambitious eight-year plan aimed at enhancing tourism infrastructure to attract investors across the Kurdistan Region.

This strategic initiative aims to capitalise on Kurdistan’s status as Iraq’s primary tourism hub, drawing visitors not only from southern and central Iraq but also from international destinations.
