IHEC Opens Coalition Registration for Kurdistan Elections

ERBIL — Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has initiated the registration process for political coalitions in preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region.

The electoral commission has urged Kurdish parties interested in participating in the forthcoming elections to establish political coalitions. The registration period will run from March 5 to March 14, 2024, with no extensions anticipated.

Earlier today, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani officially announced June 10th, 2024, as the date for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

"President Nechirvan Barzani has signed a decree to set the date for the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region. In accordance with the second paragraph of Article 10 of the Presidency Law No. 1 of 2005, as amended, President Nechirvan Barzani has decided that the general elections for the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament will take place on June 10th, 2024,” the Kurdistan Region Presidency said in a statement.

The Kurdistan Region had initially planned to hold parliamentary elections in October of the previous year. However, the elections were postponed due to disagreements among political parties regarding the single-district election law and updates to the electoral register.

Today's announcement follows a recent ruling by Iraq's Supreme Federal Court, which annulled the 11 quota seats designated for ethnic and religious minority groups residing in the Kurdistan Region.

As the registration period for political coalitions commences, Kurdish parties are gearing up for a pivotal electoral process that will shape the political landscape of the Kurdistan Region for the foreseeable future.
