Kurdish, Iraqi Forces Dismantle Int. Drug Trafficking Network in Different Provinces

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Region's Anti-Narcotics Directorate on Sunday announced that, in cooperation with Iraqi counterparts, at least 16 individuals involved in drug trafficking were arrested in different areas.

In an operation, conducted in Erbil, Baghdad and Basra, in collaboration with the ministries of interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government in Baghdad, 16 individuals were arrested in connection with drug trafficking, the Region's directorate said in a statement on Sunday.

The federal anti-drug agency also assisted the operation, according to the statement, which didn't give specifics of the place where the individuals were arrested.

During the operation, at least 40 kilograms of illicit drugs were seized in the city of Basra. The alleged drug traffickers were said to be involved in this illegal activity across the country and beyond.

Lately, there has been a significant increase in the illegal transportation of drugs from Syria into neighboring countries, including to Iraq.

To address this concerning trend, both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region have heightened their anti-narcotics operations, carrying out frequent anti-drug operations across the country to eliminate this illegal trade.
