ERBIL — Tensions are running high in Babylon province following the kidnapping and subsequent discovery of the body of a Sadrist Movement activist, as relatives and supporters issue ultimatums to authorities and threats of reprisal against perceived perpetrators.

Asser Khafaji was abducted in front of his house on Sunday afternoon. His dead body was found the next day along the Babylon International Highway, bearing signs of torture and fatal gunshot wounds to the head.

In response to the gruesome discovery, a video circulated on social media showed an elderly man, purportedly affiliated with the Saraya al-Salam members of the Sadrist Movement, delivering a stern ultimatum to Babylon Governor Adnan Faihan. He demanded that the killers of Asser Khafaji be identified and arrested within 24 hours, threatening retaliatory action against all institutions if the demand goes unmet.

Accusations have surfaced, with some Sadr supporters alleging the involvement of militiamen from other Shia groups in the abduction and murder of Khafaji. This has further fueled tensions and raised fears of escalating violence between rival factions within the Shia community.

In light of the volatile situation, the Iraqi Interior Ministry has initiated an investigation into the kidnapping and murder of the activist, pledging to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The incident has reignited longstanding tensions between the Sadrists and other Shia parties, exacerbated by Asser Khafaji's previous criticisms of armed groups affiliated with Shia parties. His activism on social media, targeting these groups within the Coordination Framework, had garnered significant attention and sparked controversy prior to his death.
