ERBIL — Kuwait is in mourning following the death of its Emir, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, at the age of 86. The royal court announced the passing in a statement aired on state television on Saturday, expressing "great sadness and sorrow."
Sheikh Nawaf ascended to the throne in September 2020, succeeding his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, who passed away in the United States at the age of 91. The late Emir had a long and distinguished career in public service, holding high offices for decades before assuming the role of the country's leader.
Born in 1937, Sheikh Nawaf was named heir apparent in 2006 and served as defense minister during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. He also held the position of interior minister, facing challenges from armed groups. Known for his modesty and maintaining a low profile, he enjoyed popularity within the ruling al-Sabah family.
Last month, the emir was admitted to the hospital after an emergency health issue, according to the state news agency KUNA. While details about the health issue were not disclosed, Sheikh Nawaf had previously handed over power to his deputy during medical checks and other situations. In March 2021, he traveled to the United States for unspecified medical checks.
Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, the sixth son of Kuwait's tenth ruler Sheikh Ahmed al-Jaber al-Mubarak, had been involved in Kuwait's political affairs since 1962. He served as governor of Huli, bringing significant progress to the city, making it a civilized, residential, and commercial hub.
His extensive career included roles such as Minister of the Interior in 1978, Minister of Defense in 1988, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs after the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior in 2003. On September 29, 2020, he assumed the role of Emir of Kuwait.
As the nation mourns the loss of its leader, Kuwait faces the task of transitioning to a new era and selecting a successor to carry on Sheikh Nawaf's legacy. The funeral arrangements and the subsequent political developments will be closely watched by both citizens and the international community.
