ERBIL — Kurdistan Region PM Masrour Barzani has emphasized the need to remove any involvement or influence of political factors in the process of reforming the Peshmerga forces for enhanced effectiveness and capabilities, avoiding political influence.
The Prime Minister made these remarks on Sunday during a meeting with a delegation of the US-led Coalition to combat the Islamic State (IS), which was led by the outgoing commanding general of the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve, Mathew McFarlane, and the new commander, Major General Joel B Vowell.
“I thanked MG McFarlane for his service and wished him success in his future mission. I also congratulated MG Vowell on his inauguration and reaffirmed the KRG's support and cooperation for the success of his mission,” PM Barzani said in a statement on his official Facebook page.
“We discussed progress in the reforms of the Ministry of Peshmerga and ways to eliminate obstacles in our efforts to unify the Peshmerga forces, and remove political interference in the Ministry.”
The meeting also shed light on the latest developments in the region, including the operations against Islamic State militants in Iraq and neighboring Syria, according to the statement.
