ERBIL — The Islamic State (IS) on Saturday carried out a new attack against an Iraqi Army unit in the disputed Kurdish province of Kirkuk, with possible casualties not known yet.
The militants targeted an army outpost near Qarachogh mountain in Sargaran area of Kirkuk, where clashes erupted between the sides, Iraqi reports said, noting that possible casualties were not immediately known.
The latest incident is part of a chain of IS attacks against civilians and security forces in the territories disputed between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and federal government where the jihadist group exploit a security vacuum to carry out terrorist activities.
According to the information BasNews has obtained, the Iraqi Federal Police has warned of a plot by the IS to attack security forces in Kirkuk and surrounding areas.
Last Wednesday, IS insurgents attacked multiple outposts of the Iraqi Army after targeting a military HUMVEE in Sargaran area in Kirkuk province, leaving several soldiers either killed or injured.
The Islamic State on Monday carried out an attack on the village of Albu Bali in Khalis district of Diyala province, where they killed eight civilians and wounded three others. The incident came less than a day after nine Iraqi policemen were killed in a similar terrorist attack near Safra village in Rashad subdistrict, Kirkuk province.
