ERBIL — Al-Karkh's criminal court has ordered the arrest and imprisonment of Mithal al-Alusi, a former parliament member and political figure, to seven years in jail.
Alusi said in a tweet that he had been sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of “insulting” the judicial authority.
"Unfortunately, I was arrested and imprisoned for seven years by Baghdad's Third Karkh Criminal Court on charges of defaming the judicial authority," the former MP said in a Twitter statement.
In August 2022, he declared his support for Muqtada al-Sadr, the leader of the Sadrist movement, for radical change and Iraq's independence in the political process. In addition, he often criticized the performance of some of Iraq's political institutions and politicians.
