Two IS Militants Killed in Sulaymaniyah

ERBIL — Security forces on Sunday announced the killing of two members of the Islamic State (IS) in Chamchamall district of Sulaymaniyah province.

The two jihadists were ambushed by special forces in the vicinity of Sangaw subdistrict in Chamchamall where clashes continued between the sides for nearly half of an hour, a statement by the Sulaymaniyah security directorate explained.

The operation was carried out based on intelligence information collected on the insurgents who had reportedly been seen in the region over the past few days.

The statement noted that the clash erupted after the IS militants refused to surrender themselves to the security forces.

Other reports said that there were four jihadists, including a woman, who was captured injured.

The local forces in Sulaymaniyah have previously captured members of the Islamic State in different areas of the province.

On 18 September, Sulaymaniyah Security Directorate said in a statement that an IS member, identified by his initials only as H. H. M., had been captured in Gopalla sub-district a few days earlier.

The militant, originally from al-Shirqat town of Salahaddin province, had joined al-Qaeda in 2005, before joining the Islamic State alongside three of his sons in 2014.
