ERBIL — The Kurdistan Mine Action Agency has cleared more than 60,000 square meters of land mines, explosive ordnances and war remnants in a rural area of Choman district, Erbil province.

Ali Abdulrahman, Director General of the Agency, told BasNews that the field was located in the village of Eni in Choman district which was cleared in cooperation with ITF organization, noting that they were destroyed in the field.

The field is safe now and can be used for tourism or agriculture purposes, Abdulrahman pointed out.

Thid comes as the border areas of the Kurdistan Region witnessed deadliest confrontations during the eight-year war between Iraq and Iran in the 1980s. As the result of which, then Iraqi government carpeted the border regions with landmines to prevent Iranian army’s advances, but they continue to take lives decades since the end of the war.

In May, this year, the Kurdistan Mine Action Agency said it had cleared a total of 156,615 square meters of land mines, explosive ordnances and war remnants in the past three months.

It also pointed out that 13,521 explosions had been recorded by the agency over the past few decades in these areas which killed or injured civilians.
