Iranian, Turkish Attacks on Kurdistan Must End: UN Envoy

ERBIL — Describing the attacks as "reckless acts", Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, said on Tuesday that the Iranian and Turkish bombardments against the Kurdistan Region must come to an end.

Hennis-Plasschaert made the remarks as briefing the United Nations Security Council on the latest political and security situation in Iraq, nearly one week after dozens were either killed or injured in deadly Iranian bombardments in the Kurdistan Region.

"Addressing the Council in May, I raised the alarm at Turkish and Iranian shelling in the North having become the “new normal” for Iraq. And with last week’s Iranian attacks, I can now only repeat myself," she stressed.

"These reckless acts, which have devastating consequences, killing and injuring people, must cease," the UN ambassador added.

"No neighbour should treat Iraq as its backyard. No neighbour should be allowed to routinely, and with impunity, violate Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Yet it is happening. Time and again."

Iran has been shelling different areas of the Kurdistan Region over the past few days, causing panic among villagers in the border areas and material damages to civilian properties.

However, the deadliest Iranian attack of its kind was last Wednesday when Tehran used over 70 ballistic missiles and explosive-laden drones to target the positions of the Iranian Kurdish opposition parties in Sulaymaniyah and Erbil, leaving 14 people killed and 58 others, most of whom civilians, wounded.

In the meantime, Turkey regularly carries out airstrikes in the border areas of the Kurdistan Region, allegedly attempting to hit the positions of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), an armed group designated as a "terrorist organization" by Ankara.
