ERBIL — The United States Central Command has reiterated its commitment to helping the Peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan Region in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) in the region.
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday received a US delegation led by Lt. General Michael Kurilla, the Commander of the US Central Command, an official press release by PM Barzani's office said.
"In the meeting, which was also attended by the new CJTF-OIR Commander, Major General Mathew McFarlane, both sides discussed the latest developments in Iraq and the wider region, as well as the development of bilateral ties between the Kurdistan Region and the US," the press release added.
The Kurdish leader further expressed his gratitude for the US support offered to the Peshmarga forces, briefing the attendees of the meeting on the ninth cabinet's reform agenda.
"Lt. General Kurilla praised the sacrifices of the Peshmerga forces in the war against the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), and reiterated his country’s commitment towards helping the Peshmerga forces," the press release continued.
PM Barzani and General Kurilla further exchanged views on the outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad, underlining the importance of resolving them in the framework of the Iraqi Constitution.
