Protesters Take to Streets in Basra for Lack of Electricity amid Scorching Heatwave

ERBIL — Several Dozens of protesters on Monday staged a demonstration on a main highway in Iraq’s southern city of Basra to protest lack of electricity and public services while the country experiences an extreme heatwave.

Photos and footages from the scene showed young angry men burning tires and blocking a highway to cause traffic and demonstrate their anger at the current situation.

Basra, one of the main oil-rich provinces of Iraq and the gate to the international water routs for oil exports, experiences regular long-hours of power cut and drinking water.

Officials said the blackout was caused by an explosion at the Khorzubir power station of Basra which has also affected the neighboring provinces of Dhi Qar and Mayssan.
