ERBIL — Sadrist Movement leader Muqtada al-Sadr met on Saturday with Iraq’s Grand Shia Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Najaf, media reports said.

Sadr was seen in the crowded streets of the neighborhood where Sistani resides in the holy Shia city.

While political observers expected the two influential Shia clerics to discuss the ongoing tensions in Iraq with continued protests in Baghdad, sources said the meeting did not focus on politics.

According to unnamed sources close to the clerics, Sadr and Sistani met to discuss preparations for Ashura ceremonies next week.

Ashura is the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala, in which Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, was killed.

Every year on this date, Shia Muslims mourn the “martyrdom of Imam Hussein”, while the majority of them gather in Najaf for special ceremonies.
