UN Envoy Discusses Iraqi Political Crisis with Sadr

ERBIL — Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, on Friday met with Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, the leader of Sadrist Movement.

The UN Envoy and Sadr discussed the political crisis in Iraq, including the ongoing protests by the supporters of the Sadrist Movement in Baghdad’s Green Zone, and ways to find a solution to the disputes.

“It was a great honour to speak with him again in person; and to discuss the importance of finding solutions to the many challenges facing,” Plasschaert said after the meeting, as cited by the UNAMI.

The discussion took place while hundreds of thousands of Sadr’s supporters gathered for Friday collective prayers in the Green Zone of Baghdad to reaffirm their support for their leaders’ message yesterday.

The Sadrist Movement insist that the current parliament of Iraq should be dissolved and the country must prepare for an early election.
