Khanaqin: At Least Four Iraqi Soldiers Killed, Injured in IS Attack

ERBIL — At least four Iraqi soldiers were either killed or wounded on Tuesday in an Islamic State (IS) attack in the disputed Kurdish district of Khanaqin, Diyala province, a report said.

Kurdistan 24 reported that the militants on Tuesday night attacked a checkpoint of the Iraqi Army near Kashkoll village, in Qara Tapa town of Khanaqin, where heavy clashes erupted between the sides.

At least two Iraqi soldiers were killed and two others were wounded, the report added, noting that the insurgents escaped the scene after the Iraqi Army sent reinforcements to the area.

However, an explosive device reportedly targeted a vehicle of the reinforcements, with no details currently available in this regard, according to the report.

Speaking to BasNews, Wasfi Timemi, head of the local administration in Qara Tapa, confirmed the report and said preliminary reports indicated that at least one Iraqi soldier was killed and another was wounded in tonight's IS attack.

This is the second IS attack against the Iraqi Army forces since yesterday. Daquq Mayor Luis Fandi told BasNews on Monday that the militants targeted a unit of the Iraqi Army in the village of Khashandma in Daquq, south of Kirkuk.

He further explained that the IS mortar attack resulted in the wounding of one Iraqi soldier and causing material damage to a vehicle.
