ERBIL — Islamic State (IS) militants attacked the fighters of pro-Iran Shia militias in eastern Iraq on Sunday, killing at least two, an official statement confirmed.
The attack occurred late at night in Shoin area, northeast of Diyala province where the Brigade 62 of Hashd al-Shaabi came under attack, the paramilitary group said.
The statement identified the victims as Rafid Mohammed Mutlag and Hussein Abbas al-Jabouri.
The attack came on the same day as Hashd al-Shaabi announced a new operation around Khanaqin to clear the area from the remnants of the Islamic State.
Elsewhere in Ain Layla of Diyala, Hashd al-Shaabi militiamen repelled another attack by IS. Vehicles of the extremist group were destroyed but possible casualties are not known.
