KDP Determined to Win Iraqi Presidency: Statement

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is determined to have its candidate win the presidential race in Baghdad, a statement said.

The party’s parliamentary bloc at the Iraqi legislature met with President Masoud Barzani on Saturday to discuss the party’s political stance in Baghdad, where the Kurdish leader emphasized that “the dignity and constitutional rights of the people” are the top priorities of the KDP.

According to a statement, the KDP insists on its presidential candidate, Rebar Ahmed, to replace Barham Salih from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

However, it said, negotiations over the remaining political disputes and the formation of the new Iraqi government will resume after the Eid al-Adha holidays.

The withdrawal of the Sadrist Movement from the Iraqi Parliament has greatly shaken the political landscape in Iraq. Yet, the parties are hoping to find common ground to form the new government.

Barzani told lawmakers from his party that any future government in Baghdad should respect the principles of “partnership, consensus, and balance” to reflect the will of all Iraqis.
