PM Barzani Orders Immediate Closure of Weapon Dealerships across Kurdistan

ERBIL — In reaction to a recent sharp increase in gun violence across the Kurdistan Region, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani ordered on Thursday the immediate closure of all weapon dealerships and the confiscation of unregistered firearms.

“Today, I have called on security services to close all weapon dealerships and seize all unlicensed weapons,” PM Barzani wrote on Twitter after reports said a couple were gunned down in Erbil, just a day after a student shot two university professors dead.

“We will not allow anyone to undermine public peace and security,” PM Barzani added, also encouraging people to join the campaign and hand over their unlicensed weapons to government authorities.

“More controls will also be introduced as part of this effort. I have also tasked the Ministry of Interior and Department of Information Technology to implement a digital gun control system as soon as possible,” the prime minister pointed out.
