Deputy PM Says Attacks Won't Affect Gas Production at Khor Mor

ERBIL — Rocket attacks will not affect gas production at the Kurdistan Region's largest gas field of Khor Mor in Chamchamall, Deputy PM Qubad Talabani said on Saturday.

Talabani made the remarks during a visit to the Khor Mor gas field on Saturday night following a rocket attack targeting the key field. He was accompanied by a Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) delegation that included the Peshmerga Minister and the KRG Acting Minister of Natural Resources.

During his visit, the deputy prime minister ensured the senior management of UAE-based Dana Gas, which runs the Khor Mor gas field, that the KRG works on protecting the lives of the company’s staff.

The KRG, meanwhile, will communicate with the Iraqi federal government in efforts to put an end to such rocket attacks.

After Saturday's rocket attack, which was the third one of its kind in four days, some Iraqi Army units were deployed to areas around the Kurdistan Region's border near Chamchamal district, and in response, Peshmerga units were deployed to Khor Mor.

Safin Dzayee, head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, strongly condemned yesterday's attack in a Twitter statement and said that Baghdad "must" take actions immediately.

"I strongly condemn the terrorist attack on Khor Mor gas field in Chamchamal district. Federal Gov must take immediate action to prevent further attacks & hold those responsible accountable," Dzayee wrote on Twitter. "KRG will take all measures to safeguard the wellbeing of field workers & local population."
