Iraq Demands Increased Gas Imports from Iran

ERBIL — Iraq is planning to increase Iranian gas imports to boost electricity production during the extremely hot summer, an official said.

Electricity Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Mousa told reporters on Saturday that the Iraqi government is planning to increase daily electricity productions from 20,000 MW to 24,000 MW as the consumption is exceeding production rate during summer.

He explained that Iran exports 4 million cubic meter of natural gas to Iraq now, and Baghdad has already demanded to boost it to 50-55 million cubic meter daily.

The official also noted that the request was forwarded to the Iranian government after Baghdad paid the energy debts to Tehran.
