ERBIL — At least one Iraqi soldier was killed on Thursday as a result of an Islamic State (IS) attack in the disputed Kurdish district of Tuz Khurnatu, police said.
Hussein Ali, Chief of Tuz Khurnatu Police, confirmed the report to BasNews and noted that the jihadists earlier in the evening carried out an attack against the Iraqi Army forces in the area of Dibaj.
The militants opened fire at the Iraqi Army forces and killed a soldier instantly, the police chief further explained.
This comes amid a rapid spike in the terrorist activities of the extremist group in the territories disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.
Iraqi warplanes today carried out a number of airstrikes against several IS hideouts in the disputed Kurdish province of Kirkuk, the Military said in a statement.
The Security Media Cell said in a statement at the time that the F-16s targeted an IS hideout in the area of Wadi al-Gur in Kirkuk province, killing a number of militants.
Moreover, the Iraqi intelligence service cooperatively with the Army forces targeted a group of Islamic State militants in Wadi al-Shay area of Kirkuk province.
