IED Blast Injures Member of Iranian Kurdish Opposition Party in Erbil: Statement

ERBIL — An explosion carried out via an improvised explosive device (IED) on Monday injured a member of the Organization of Iranian Kurdistan Struggle (Khabat) in Erbil, Kurdistan Region Counter-Terrorism Service confirmed. 

The blast took place in Setaqan neighborhood of the Kurdish capital, where some reports said a headquarters of the Khabat party is located. 

“The injured, identified as (Akbar Safar Almas) was the driver of the vehicle. Born in 1973, he is from the Eastern Kurdistan [Iranian Kurdistan] and a member of the Organization of Iranian Kurdistan Struggle,” reads the statement by the Counter-Terrorism Service. 

Investigations into the incident are underway now, it added. 

BasNews has learned that Almas has been transferred to a hospital where he is being treated for several severe injuries. 

No claim of responsibility has been made and no suspects are yet arrested. The party itself is yet to comment on the incident due to the ongoing investigations.
