Iraq: Over 6,000 Men Applied for Second Marriage in Three Months

ERBIL — Between March and May 2022, a total of 6,030 applications were submitted for court’s approval on second marriage, according to a statement by the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq.

The Public Relations and Legal Department of the Council revealed that Iraqi courts processed 3,801 applications within the past three months and rejected 1,896 cases.

According to the statement, 1,905 applications were approved to allow the applicants marry a second wife in accordance with the Iraqi Social Status Law.

With 339 approved applications, Nineveh province had the highest rate of second-wife marriages in the past three months, followed by Basra (222), and Salahaddin (196).

Polygamy is legal in Iraq. According to a Pew Research report in 2019, nearly 2% of Iraqis live in polygamous households.

Iraq's 1959 Personal Status law, introduced by the left-wing president Abd al-Karim Qasim, heavily restricted the ability of men to take more than one wife.

According to the law, men wishing to marry a second wife while still married to the first one, are required to obtain permission of a judge, provide proof of his financial capability, and a justification such as the inability of his first wife to bear children.
