Iraq, Iran to Form Technical Delegations to Discuss Climate Challenges

ERBIL — Iraq and Iran have agreed to form technical delegations to discuss the climate change challenges.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Wednesday held a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Hussein Amir Abdollahian to discuss climate change in the region and the dust storms that engulfed several provinces in Iraq and Iran over the past few days.

The recent dust storms, drought, water shortage in Iraq, desertification, and biodiversity loss were in the center of the discussions.

Several waves of dust storm have hit Iraq and Iran since January, often causing a suspension to air traffic and government office operations in the two countries.

Experts believe that the repeated dust storms in Iraq and other neighboring countries have been caused by soil degradation, intense droughts, and low rainfall linked to climate change.
