Norway Warns Citizens to Avoid Traveling to Iraq Except Kurdistan Region Provinces

ERBIL — Norway's Foreign Ministry has advised its citizens not to travel to Iraq except Kurdistan Region's Erbil, Sulaimaniyah, and Duhok provinces.

The ministry issued the statement last week on May 19, in which it warned that Norwegian citizens should avoid traveling to Iraqi cities unless strictly necessary.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs makes ongoing assessments of the travel councils. The security situation in Iraq, in general, is demanding, and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil) are a threat in some provinces," the statement reads.

As for Norwegian citizens who are already in Iraq, the ministry has encouraged them to fully assess their safety.

It has also recommend that those Norwegian citizens planning a trip download the Travel Ready app which would provide the citizens up-to-date information for 200 countries.

This comes as the Islamic State still poses a serious threat to security forces and civilians in different areas of Iraq through its sleeper cells.

The jihadist group on Monday night attacked a village in Diyala province where it killed seven members of the same family in addition to a number of security personnel.
