ERBIL — The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) agreed on Wednesday to form committees for negotiation over the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region.
The party’s politburos met today at the Kurdistan Region Presidency to ease political tensions and help the situation in the region to de-escalate.
“During the meeting, bilateral relations, current situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and the opportunities for working together were frankly discussed,” reads a joint statement by the KDP and PUK politburos.
They also highlighted a recent initiative by the Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani to help the Kurdish political parties return to the negotiating table and resolve their disputes through dialogue.
“They also reaffirmed cooperation with and support for the Kurdistan Regional Government and legitimate institutions, as well as ending media campaigns by the sides,” the statement added.
The Kurdistan Region Presidency has set the parliamentary elections for 1 October 2022, with the KDP supporting the vote to be held on time while the PUK asking for the amendment of the Election Law which might require postponing the election.
