PM Barzani, Qatari Emir Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday met with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the Erbil and Doha.

The pair held the meeting on the sidelines of the annual summit of the World Economic Forum taking place in Davos, a brief press release by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said.

The discussions also covered the latest developments in Iraq and the wider region, the press release added.

Prime Minister Barzani wrote on Twitter after the meeting that he was “pleased” to see the Qatari Emir as well as Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

PM Barzani earlier the day held a meeting with Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA, during which the Kurdish leader urged the International Energy Agency to help the KRG and Iraqi federal government through technical assistance and training.

“In the last 3 years, we’ve completed the biggest flare gas to power project — at 165 MW capacity; seen private solar projects emerge, and tendered three 25 MW solar farms, the Kurdish prime minister wrote on Twitter. “I urged Fatih Birol to help KRI and Iraq through policy advice, technical assistance and training.”
