Five People Killed in IS Attacks near Kirkuk

ERBIL — At least five people were killed on Monday after Islamic State (IS) militants carried out an attack targeting farmers in the disputed Kurdish province of Kirkuk.

The incident took place in Bashir village of Taza sub-district, Kirkuk province, where the militants had set fire to a number of agricultural fields in Balldagh Dukishman, Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Service said in a statement.

Iraqi security forces and locals gathered at the site to extinguish the fire before they were attacked by IS insurgents, according the statement.

At least three members of the security forces and two civilians were killed as a result of the IS attack.

Other unconfirmed reports said that the jihadists targeted the 16th Brigade of pro-Iran Hashd al-Shaabi and clashes were ongoing for a while.

Preliminary reports indicated that two local farmers and two IS militants were killed during the fighting.

The Islamic State has intensified terrorist activities in the disputed Kurdish areas lately.

The Iraqi Security Media Cell said on Monday that 21 IS members had been captured during separate security operations carried out by forces of the National Security Agency in Anbar, Diyala, Kirkuk, and Ninevah provinces.

Among the detainees was also a commander who worked in the jihadists group’s so-called Diwan al-Jund, according to the Security Media Cell.
