PM Barzani, JICA President Discuss Support for Kurdistan Agriculture, Startups

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) met on Monday in Davos to discuss support for Kurdistan’s agriculture, trade, and technology.

On the sidelines of the annual summit of the World Economic Forum (WEF), PM Barzani and Akihiko Tanaka reviewed the operation of JICA and its engagement in developing different sectors in the Kurdistan Region, according to a press release by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

“We know that our farmers need new tractors, harvesters and planting equipment; entrepreneurs need small loans, and tax breaks for startups to grow,” PM Masrour Barzani wrote on Twitter after the meeting.

“Japan has common synergies with our people. JICA President Akihiko Tanaka and I discussed how they can support these goals,” he added.

Earlier the day, the Kurdish leader met Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Qatari Minister of Commerce and Industry, and  Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

While in Davos, PM Barzani will speak during a panel discussion entitled “A New Security Architecture in the Middle East”. He will also hold a series of meetings on the sidelines of the event with senior government officials, businessmen, and economists.

More than 50 heads of government are expected to attend the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in the Swiss ski resort town of Davos from May 22 to May 26. The World Economic Forum (WEF) said the Annual Meeting 2022 at Davos will focus on 'history at a turning point', the theme of the summit.
