Iranian President Vows to Avenge Killing of IRGC Colonel

ERBIL — Iran will avenge the killing of Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ (IRGC) colonel who was shot dead on Sunday in Baghdad, President Ebrahim Raisi said.

Two assailants on a motorbike opened fire at Colonel Sayyad Khodai outside his home and killed him instantly.

“I insist on the serious pursuit (of the killers) by security officials, and I have no doubt that the blood of this great martyr will be avenged,” Raisi said after the assassination.

“There is no doubt that the hand of global arrogance can be seen in this crime,” he added.

The IRGC described Khodai in a previous statement as “defender of the sanctuary”, a term often used by Tehran for its armed forces leading the Iranian military agenda in Iraq and Syria.

According to officials, a security operation is underway across Iran to pursue the assailants who managed to escape the scene after firing five bullets directly at the IRGC colonel.

It was the most high-profile killing inside Iran since the November 2020 murder of top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.
