Over 5,300 Iraqis Arrested in Past Four Months over Drug-Related Charges: Statement

ERBIL — Iraqi security forces arrested more than 5,300 people in the past four months over consumption, distribution, or smuggling of illicit drugs, an official statement said on Tuesday.

Within the same period, millions of captagon pills and at least 100 kilograms of narcotics were seized by the security forces in different provinces.

Early in May, Iraqi Counter-Narcotic Forces announced that they had seized 6 million captagon pills during a special operation in southwest of capital Baghdad.

The pills were set for distribution in areas of Baghdad and other provinces, a statement said at the time, noting that three Iraqi nationals and four other suspects from Arab countries were arrested in connection with the case.

It added that the security forces broke up a second drug ring after an Arab national was arrested "in possession of six kilograms of hashish", while two accomplices were also detained.

All 10 accused "admitted to links with international drug trafficking networks", it said.

Iraq’s northwestern neighbour Syria is the Middle East's main captagon producer, and its southern neighbour Saudi Arabia the main consumer.
