ERBIL — Three Iraqi men were kidnapped and executed by the Islamic State (IS) in the eastern province of Diyala, a local official confirmed on Tuesday.
The victims were abducted in Albu Alewa area of Uzeim district and shot dead later, Diyala Police Spokesperson Nihad Mohammed told BasNews.
He said the victims were farmers, and identified them as Abbas Mohammed, Muhsin Mazlum, and Abbas Fadhil.
The region struggles with repeated IS attacks targeting civilians and security forces. Meanwhile, abductions have significantly increased in the recent months.
IS militants often stay in the mountainous areas of Hamrin between Khalis and Amerli, respectively in the provinces of Diyala and Salahaddin.
Earlier on Monday, local authorities said a shepherd was kidnapped in the areas around Tuz Khurmatu, and his body was found hours later after unknown perpetrators had shot him dead.
IS often kidnaps civilians in the disputed Kurdish areas and asks for ransom to release them.
