ERBIL — Iraqi top Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has called on Russia and Ukraine to return to dialogue, saying war is useless.
Earlier the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country was under a “full-scale invasion” by Russia, which was followed by reports of casualties and Russia warplanes began hitting targets inside Ukraine.
“I am still looking forward to the principle of dialogue prevailing between the two Christian neighboring countries,” as war is “absolutely useless,” Sadr wrote in a statement published on his Twitter account on Wednesday night.
Sadr said US influence on Ukraine and Ukraine's divergent interests to those of Russia's do not constitute "justifications for war at all.”
The Shia cleric also warned that the crisis in Ukraine could drag the entire world into “relentless war”.
According to the latest update, at least seven people were killed and nine others were injured in Russia airstrikes across Ukraine.
