ERBIL — The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday condemned a recent Islamic State (IS) attack in the Iraqi province of Diyala which killed nearly a dozen of soldiers.
The IS militants on Friday night carried out an attack against the headquarters of 1st Regiment of the 2nd Brigade of the Iraqi Army in an area between the villages of Tal'aa and Um Karami, west of Uzeim district of Diyala, where 11 soldiers were killed and several more were injured.
The UNSC also expressed its "deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Iraq," wishing them a speedy and full recovery of those who were injured.
"The members of the Security Council reiterated their support for the independent, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, democratic process and prosperity of Iraq," the UNSC said in a statement.
"The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice, and urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Government of Iraq and all other relevant authorities in this regard."
It further called on all countries to "combat by all mean, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts."
The UN Security Council reiterated its support for the security of Iraq and the continued fight against terrorism, including he Islamic State.
